Read My Lips – Improved Co-ordination in APS
“These benefits are often symptomatic of the factory mastering the most fundamental element viz. improved co-ordination.”
George Bush Senior is famous for having said “Read My Lips – No New Taxes”. Well maybe not famous just for that, and we would like the words to have more local meaning. I digress.
When we talk to prospects about installing or using an APS, for the justification, we all focus on hard returns that we can use in ROI calculations.
We talk about effectiveness and efficiency and try and pin improvement and returns to these elements.
These benefits are often symptomatic of the factory mastering the most fundamental element viz. improved co-ordination.
Developing a feasible schedule in the APS and then advising the direct or associated departments of the tasks they need to perform, results in something similar to a multi-oared boat suddenly starting to synchronize its activities.
You go from discord to stunning performance.
The Scheduler can be likened to the Coxswain, directing the beat, adjusting for currents, corners and straights.
Using TOC speak, if we can sub-ordinate the departmental activities to the sequence determined by the Scheduler, we get the benefits we expect e.g. improved customer service, increased productivity etc.
In most factories the schedule produced is not fine enough (requiring departments in the process to guess the sequence of their activities necessary to support the objective) or confused by overriding instructions from expeditors, manager and sales departments. Chaos!!
Giving the Scheduler an APS tool to create good feasible schedules that all direct and associated departments can use delivers the benefits required.
